If you’re preparing for the IELTS Writing Task 2, understanding the basic essay structure is a great place to start. The recommended IELTS Writing Task 2 essay has the following basic structure:
  • An introductory paragraph that paraphrases the question prompt and states what the essay will be about
  • Body paragraphs, each dealing with a distinct topic and then elaborated with details and examples
  • A conclusion that sums up or restates the points made in the essay
Basic IELTS Writing Task 2 Structure

1. Introduction (1 paragraph)

What to write:
  • Paraphrase the question (rewrite it in your own words)
  • State your opinion or outline your main points (depending on the essay type)
How to write it:
  • Use simple synonyms or change the sentence structure when paraphrasing the topic.
  • For opinion essays, clearly say what you believe (e.g., I believe that... or In my opinion...).
  • For discussion or problem/solution essays, briefly mention the main ideas you will discuss.

2. Body Paragraph 1 (1 paragraph)

What to write:
  • Main idea 1 (your first key point)
  • Explanation (why this idea is important or true)
  • Example (a specific case to support your point)

How to write it:
  • Start with a clear topic sentence (e.g., One reason why...).
  • Add 1–2 sentences explaining the idea in more detail.
  • Give a simple, realistic example (e.g., For instance, many people...).

3. Body Paragraph 2 (1 paragraph)

What to write:
  • Main idea 2 (your second key point)
  • Explanation
  • Example
How to write it:
  • Begin with another topic sentence (e.g., Another reason is that...).
  • Develop the idea with a short explanation.
  • Include an example to support this point.

🔹 If the essay requires more points, you can write a third body paragraph, but two are usually enough.

4. Conclusion (1 paragraph)

What to write:
  • Summarize your main points
  • Restate your opinion (if needed)

How to write it:
  • Don’t add new ideas.
  • Use simple phrases like In conclusion, To sum up, or Overall.
  • Repeat your key message clearly in a new way (e.g., To sum up, I believe that...).
Here is an example IELTS Task 2 opinion essay using the above structure for the following question prompt:
  • "The most important consideration when choosing any career or job is having a high income. To what extent do you agree or disagree?"

(Introduction*)
Many believe that earning a high salary should be the top priority when people decide on a career or job. While a good income is important for meeting one’s financial needs and improving quality of life, I believe that other factors, such as job satisfaction and work-life balance, are just as important.

(Body Paragraph 1*)
It is true that a high income can provide a sense of security and allow people to enjoy a more comfortable lifestyle. Moreover, earning a good salary can give people the ability to support their families and plan for the future. For example, well-paid jobs can help individuals afford better housing, healthcare, and education, as well as save for retirement or traveling. For these reasons, salary is often seen as a key consideration when choosing a job.

(Body Paragraph 2*)
However, non-financial aspects such as professional fulfillment and personal well-being should not be overlooked when making career decisions. Someone who enjoys their work and is able to make time for their personal life is likely to feel more fulfilled in the long run. When people genuinely love what they do, they are often more motivated, productive, and likely to stay in their job long term. Furthermore, having a good work-life balance allows employees to take care of their well-being—for example, by spending quality time with family and friends, engaging in physical exercise, or pursuing their hobbies. These activities not only contribute to a much happier life, but also help people become better employees.

(Conclusion*)
In conclusion, while earning a high income is certainly an important factor when selecting a career, it should not be the only consideration. Other aspects, such as career satisfaction and a balanced lifestyle, also play a crucial role in long-term happiness and success.

*In the actual essay, DO NOT write headings for the Introduction, Body Paragraph 1, etc!
Paraphrasing used in the essay:

1. Words from the question prompt
  • important consideration  → top priority, important factor, aspect, key consideration
  • high income → high salary, good income, well-paid jobs

2. Words in the essay
  • job satisfaction  → professional fulfillment, career satisfaction
  • work-life balance → personal well-being, to make time for their personal life,  a balanced lifestyle

Vocabulary and collocations used in the essay:
financial needs
quality of life
a sense of security
a comfortable lifestyle
well-paid jobs
to afford (better housing, etc)
to save for retirement
non-financial aspects
(to not) overlook
to feel fulfilled
to spend quality time
to engage in physical exercise
to pursue hobbies
to play a crucial role

🔹 These collocations, even though some of them seem simple enough, show effective word use, higher-level language skills, and can be applied to a variety of other IELTS topics.
Final Tips:
  • Plan before writing – jot down your 2 main points first.
  • Keep each paragraph focused on one idea.
  • Paraphrase key vocabulary to avoid being repetitive but be careful to choose synonyms that fit the meaning and sound natural.
  • Use linking words (e.g., moreover, furthermore, in conclusion) to organize your ideas but avoid overusing them or inserting them where they don’t fit naturally.
